Juniors Gearing and Training Advice
Friday, 25 November 2011 03:32

Hi Parents & Juniors,

We have had some new juniors joining us – so I thought I’d send this info out again – sorry for the repeat for some.

I’ll also be following up soon on the junior open events in the Cycling Queensland calendar for the Summer season.

*****Christmas holiday training will be Junior Track sessions at Caboolture Velodrome *****

You can still do these sessions if you do not have a track bike

STARTING WEDNESDAY 21ST DECEMBER

WEDNESDAY 28TH DECEMBER

WEDNESDAY 4TH JANUARY

WEDNESDAY 11TH JANUARY

It is imperative that juniors comply with gear restrictions according to their age category.  Parents could please assist by making sure that your child has the appropriate gears locked off.  If you don’t know how to do this, the bike shop that you deal with will be able to help you.  This is a physical adjustment, which means that harder gears cannot be accessed whilst riding.  I have added the formal information below with the link from the Cycling Queensland website.

TRAINING - How much training on a weekly basis?

Here is a general guideline for junior training – as set by Cycling Australia.  You may already be doing this especially for the younger juniors when attending Sunday Training.  However, for the older juniors with QLD State Junior Road & Criterium Championships in July, you may want to add a little more to your training regime.  If you are looking at doing this, I suggest adding volume gradually each week.  Racing & Track sessions also count.

Here is a general guideline for junior training – as set by Cycling Australia.

AGE GROUP

TRAINING Per Week

Per session

Focus

9-10 years

1-3hrs

Max 30mins

Skills development, traffic awareness, safety

11-12 years

2 - 5hrs or 40 – 100kms

No single session longer than 30km or 1.25hrs

Skills development, traffic awareness, road safety, bike handling skills, race skills etc

13-14 years

3 - 8hrs or 100 – 200kms

No single session longer than 60km or 2hrs

Combination of both skills development & physical conditioning, all aspects.

15–16 years

6 - 14hrs or 150 – 350kms

No single session longer than 90km or 3hrs

Combination of both skills development & physical conditioning, all aspects. Some specificity in training can begin during the 16th year.

17-18 years

8 - 18hrs or 240 – 550kms

No single session longer than 160km or 5hrs

Physical conditioning, specific to certain events.  Skill development is more event specific.

TRACK training

HPRW Juniors if you don’t have a track bike yet……

* 3 are waiting to be borrowed – size 43, 52 & 54.

* They are at Aspley Bike Hub 1297 Gympie Road, ASPLEY  4034 PH: 07  3162 1070

* If you require your gearing to be restricted to your age group Aspley Bike Hub can assist with this too.

Rules / Regulations – from Cycling Queensland website

Junior Equipment Regulations
For all junior categories up to & including JM17 – JW17 the following equipment restrictions will apply for road & track competitions.

1. For all events a standard triangular frame may only be used. Such frames shall consist of standard tubing of dimensions no more than 80mm maximum and no less than 25mm minimum. (refer Annexure 6 UCI Bicycle Regulation).

2. For all events, wheels must have at least 12 spokes with the sole exception that construction of the rim shall exclude the use of composite fibres (Carbon, Kevlar, Aramid and similar fibres).

3. Only high pressure detachable tyres and tubes shall be used. A detachable type tube means the tube is detachable from the tyre casing. Such high pressure tyres shall be beaded.

Junior Handlebars
Handlebars shall be of the standard “Classic” style. Bolt on handlebar extensions shall be allowed for under 15 and under 17 riders for the individual pursuit, team pursuit and road and track time trials only. No modification to the extension shall be allowed.

Junior Gear Limitations
Gearing restrictions apply to all Junior category-specific races (in their highest useable gear). Restricted gearing rules exist internationally and are enforced to guard against damage to young bones and muscles that could result through the use of big gears at an early age. Gear restrictions are based on a “roll out distance”.

Roll Out Distance is the distance the bike travels in a straight line through one full revolution of the pedal cranks in the biggest gear on the bike:

·J11/13 =  5.500 metres

·J15      =  6.000 metres

·J17      =  6.500 metres

·J19      =  7.930 metres

The following chart gives a number of gear combinations that suit the criteria. The calculations are based on a standard 700C rim with racing type slick HP tyre. However, it must be noted that this is a guide only and the actual distance covered will be dependent upon brand and type of tyre fitted, therefore the rider must ensure compliance by measuring their own “roll-out”.

J11/13  -  5.500 metres
39 x 16  =  5.13 m          40 x 16  =  5.26 m     41 x 16  =  5.39 m
